Join the Golf Fore Nature iNaturalist Project
One of the simplest (and most fun!) ways to help nature in golf landscapes is to start noticing what’s already there. That’s exactly what we’re doing with our Golf Fore Nature iNaturalist project — and everyone is welcome to take part.
What is iNaturalist?
iNaturalist is a free app and website that lets you record wildlife sightings — marsupials, birds, insects, frogs, plants, fungi and more. You take a photo, upload it, and iNaturalist’s community and AI help identify what you saw. Your observations become part of a shared, open dataset that scientists, educators and land managers can use.
Why it matters for golf landscapes
Golf courses are often undervalued as natural places, but they can support a surprising variety of life — especially where native areas, trees, and water bodies are nurtured to thrive. Recording what’s present helps us:
Build a living picture of biodiversity across golf landscapes
Track seasonal changes and rare sightings
Connect everyday golfers with the nature around them
How to get involved
Download the iNaturalist app (iOS/Android) or visit the website.
Create an account (takes less than a minute).
Join our project:
👉 https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/golf-fore-natureWhen you’re out on a golf course (or nearby), snap a photo of a plant, insect, bird, fungus — anything you see!
Upload your observation and add it to the Golf Fore Nature project.
📸 Tips for great observations
Get as close as you can without disturbing wildlife (or golfers or disrupting pace of play!)
Take clear photos from multiple angles (if you can)
Make sure the location is accurate
Add any notes (time of day, habitat type, behaviour) when you get back to the clubhouse (or home)
Who can join?
Absolutely anyone:
Golfers and club members
Course superintendents and staff
Families, kids, and nature lovers
Schools and community groups
You don’t need to be a scientist — just curious!
